Softscape & Hardscape

When beginning to research how to design your outdoor living space, people often search using the term “landscaping.” What people may not realize, is that landscaping is actually a combination of two very different aspects: softscape and hardscape. The two go hand in hand however they each comprise very different elements of your outdoor space.

Let’s start with softscape. Softsape refers to all of the living elements of a landscape design. These include plants, trees, flowers, grass, shrubs, ground cover, vegetable and herb gardens, and any other organic materials. Softscape elements typically grow and change over time, and influence the ecological health of the outdoor space. In most cases, these require regular maintenance.

What is hardscape? Hardscape refers to any non-living elements of landscaping that typically provide structure, function, and durability. These features are made of solid materials most commonly from stone, wood, concrete, or metal. Hardscape features often define the layout of the outdoor space. Some examples of hardscape elements includes; patios, decks, retaining walls, driveways, pathways, pergolas, gazebos, fencing, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and rocks.

Balance is key when designing your outdoor space. Adding too much hardscape can create a cold, uninviting space but alternatively, having too much softscape can turn into an unstructured look of overgrowth of plants. The interplay between these elements ensures a visually appealing and practical outdoor living space. You also want to consider the amount of maintenance you’d like to be doing on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. It is important to consider all factors when designing your outdoor space.
